As a Certified Court Interpreter (as well as professional translator) it's not unusual to run into people who mistakenly refer to my profession as that of a 'court translator.' In case you are interested in the perhaps subtle but significant distinction: the difference between an interpreter and translator is that the former deals with spoken language while the latter works with written texts. Of course, there are quite a few translators active in the legal field, who are specialized in translating technical, legal documents from one language into another. But there are some pointed differences among those professional fields. Not to become sidetracked in details, but one such significant difference is related to so-called translation … [Read more...] about If you ask for language service business, ask for it by its proper name!
Ouch! I just spoke with one the Bluehost tech support engineers, inquiring about the mysterious outage of not just the NITA Online and the NNIC servers, but even its domain name servers, which is quite rare, indicating a major incident. Well, I wasn't off the mark: indeed, Bluehost has been hit with an unprecedented power outage, knocking even their own computers offline. The tech support engineer himself didn't have access to a computer; it also explains why they couldn't put some alert up on their server status page... Some extremely unusual collision of circumstances must have taken place to reach that level of snafu, given the multiple layers of fall-back assets and redundancies that their datacenter has. I surely hope that they won't … [Read more...] about NITA Online server at nitaonline.org hit by power outage
It probably won't surprise much that the Spanish newspaper El País is a fixture among the dailies I routinely seek out for news, background and assorted insight into current affairs. And given my earlier transgressions on this blog, it shouldn't come as a surprise either that I am thoroughly enjoying the month ahead, chock full of footballmania. Rest assured, though: I won't engage in match-by-match replays here. Just a quick reference of what I think are two most remarkable goals, so far: South Africa's stunningly beautiful goal in their opening match against Mexico, scored when Siphiwe Tshabalala rushed to fire off his heat seeking missile after a furiously fast counter attack. And of course, there's today's hardly believable clanker … [Read more...] about On global footballitis, odd balls and artful penmanship
Just so you know, a few minutes ago FC Barcelona has won the La Liga national Spanish football league championship. But far be it from me to dwell on that magnificent achievement. More pertinently, I note that Dutch popular broadsheet De Telegraaf reports that same fact in an on-line article. Its text mentions the opener of the brace scored during the match by Argentinian super striker Lionel Messi, as follows: Na de rust was het de beurt aan Lionel Messi om te scoren. De Argentijn maakte zijn na een prachtige aanval van de formatie van Pep Guardiola. An English translation of that might read: After the half-time break it was Lionel Messi's turn to score. The Argentinian made his, after a wonderful attack play by Pep Guardiola's team. I … [Read more...] about On possession of good football and wrong possessive prononoun skills
I just now found out - thanks to an email announcement from WordPress' very own Matt Mullenweg - that there's going to be a WordCamp right here at UNR, in Reno! Woohoo! If you know me, you'll also know that I'm very much into working with WordPress, as my favorite blogging and CMS platform. You're reading this text because it's published on a WordPress powered site; nuff said. The Reno Tahoe WordCamp will be held on June 12. Stay tuned. … [Read more...] about WordCamp in the Reno-Tahoe area!
